The Hangar 11 Collection was formed in 1999 primarily to acquire, restore and actively fly a number of original World War II fighter aircraft. We were focused particularly on the aircraft that were operated in substantial numbers by the RAF, the so called “Big Four”. These comprise Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, North American P51 Mustang and Curtis P40 Kittyhawk. These fighters were used in large numbers by Allied squadrons in the European, North African and Far Eastern theatres of war.
As such The Hangar 11 Collection acquired each of the big four over a period of years and undertook a programme of mechanical and cosmetic improvements to ensure that each example was as close to the condition in which it left the factory over 60 years ago as possible.
We consider ourselves custodians of history and take that responsibility very seriously as we actively strive to improve the collection every year but at the same time to fly these aircraft at every opportunity to allow the public and aircraft enthusiasts to enjoy their unique magnetism. Hangar 11 Collection is often described as a “Living collection” as we are really the diametric opposite of a museum are flying year round and a very regular sight in the skies of England in winter and summer.
Thus far the collection has been very much a private organisation, although Peter Teichman is always very friendly and approachable at airshows. However, ostensibly Hangar 11 has no direct public access apart from by invitation. All the costs associated with this very substantial programme of acquisition and restoration have been sourced privately but now Peter has decided that it is time to open up the collection to a small number of supporters and to involve those members at a more intimate level and to raise additional funding to progress the ongoing restorations and maintenance schedules.
As a result, effective from 25th September 2009, the Hangar 11 Collection will establish a new supporters club to help achieve the aims articulated above plus vitally, to assist with the further restoration of our MK IX Spitfire project PT 879 a Soviet Air force fighter that crashed in May 1945 in Russia with just 28 hours service. This is arguably the finest restoration project of a wartime Spitfire still remaining as it is the best part of a complete aircraft and will be painstakingly restored by the Hangar 11 team and a select few experienced outside contractors over the next few years.
Membership of the Hangar 11 Supporters club will bestow a number of special privileges which will primarily include:
